Side yards are easy to ignore - until they're not. When a retaining wall starts to shift, lean, or just fall apart, it stops being a cosmetic problem and starts being a functional one. Soil moves. Water finds its way in. The whole bed starts to lose its shape. That's exactly what was going on here.

The original wall had seen better days. The blocks were uneven, sections had shifted out of alignment, and the whole thing just looked tired. It wasn't holding anything back the way it should. We tore it out and started fresh, which is really the only right call when a wall has gotten to that point.

We rebuilt it using segmental retaining wall blocks - the kind with clean, consistent lines and a finish that actually looks sharp next to the home's brick exterior. The wall runs along the full length of the side yard and wraps at the corner, which gives it a finished, intentional look rather than a patched-together fix. We also seeded and covered the disturbed ground alongside it to get the lawn recovering right away.

That's the part people don't always think about with a job like this - the stabilization work that happens alongside the wall itself. Getting the grade right, managing the disturbed soil, making sure the wall is set to last. It's not just stacking block and calling it done.

What's left is a side yard that's actually clean and structured. No more sagging, no more washout, no more eyesore every time you look out the window. Just a solid wall that does its job and looks good doing it.
